Roads minister Mike Penning has announced that the Government is to establish separate motorway stops for trucks.
Mr Penning said the Government is introducing the change to the current policy, which doesn’t allow trucks to use the facility of service areas.
The new proposal, which will be of huge benefit to many hauliers and pallet delivery companies, has received strong support from the haulage industry.
The minister also said measures to cut down on regulations, enable healthy competition and enhance the quality of service areas are being considered too.
He added: “My decision will create an environment that encourages the development of roadside rest facilities on motorways that cater specifically for the needs of the haulage industry.
“This will improve working conditions for heavy goods vehicle drivers and support the Government’s commitment to improving road safety.”
