Hauliers traveling through Calais have been warned against stopping within 50km of the port after a group of illegal immigrants were found hiding in a lorry bound for Peterborough. Gangs are known to operate around the Calais area, covering an approximate 100km outside the port, organising passage in exchange for cash from work found here in the UK. Peter Cullum, head of international affairs for the Road Haulage Association, has confirmed that members of the RHA have reported a number of incidents involving would-be illegal immigrants trying to get into vehicles at Calais. The dozen Albanian stowaways were found by a sniffer dog, but drivers are urged not to take the risk and to keep from stopping the closer they get to Calais.
