Heavy rainfall, flooding and landslides caused Devon’s rail links to the rest of the country to be closed this month. Speed restrictions were put in place along the Exmouth and Exeter line due to flooding in the area. While the main line from Exeter is now back in business, allowing travel to Devon from outside the county, connecting lines are still down and replacement bus services have been instigated. The line was closed due to the River Exe bursting its banks, and the line was reopened 18 hours ahead of schedule, to the relief of those caught away from home. Network Rail are working closely with the Environment Agency and the Met Office to ensure that further disruptions are kept to a minimum, putting in place proactive measure to protect signaling where possible.
