Home renovation isn’t to be taken lightly, and finding the right pieces to match your vision can take time, a little ingenuity and some thinking outside the box. As is often the case, the perfect item is found a couple of hundred miles away from your home, but that needn’t stop you from placing your order, even for something as large and heavy as a fireplace. So here are our tip tips for shipping a fireplace, because you have to start somewhere (and don’t forget, many of these tips apply to any large or bulky items).
Size does matter, at least in this instance. Delivery costs are based on size, just as much as they are on weight. In order to get accurate prices, try to be as accurate in your measurements as possible, it could help reduce costs significantly if you fall in to a smaller category of delivery.
As with size, weight is important. Your best guestimate will give you some idea of costing, and potential delivery services can provide you with an accurate costing once they’ve collected your item.
Packaging is key. Fireplaces come in all sorts of shapes and forms, not just cast iron period appropriate, or marble surrounds. Your delivery service should be able to advise you what packaging is required for the type of courier delivery service you’re picked. For example, pallet services usually require your item is only as wide as the pallet, is properly protected and then shrink wrapped and strapped to the pallet for transport. Don’t end up with a fireplace that can’t be delivered because it’s not been properly packaged.
If you’re not going to be there when your fireplace is sent to you then it’s important to be clear what the seller will and won’t do. Some delivery services will package your item for you, for a fee, but it will need to be organised ahead of time.
Make sure that your delivery service can actually deliver your fireplace to you. Be aware that pallet deliveries rarely deliver to your front door, and certainly won’t bring your fireplace into the house for you. Kerbside delivery means exactly that, so if you have stairs to your property or live alone, try to organise friends to help you move your new fireplace in to its new home rather than put your back out struggling by yourself.
